I just discovered this very talented designer on Etsy.com tonight (yeah, I know, I'm supposed to be in bed), because she's the featured artist!! Her shop is heidiandseek.etsy.com, and she's based out of Melbourne, Australia. She creates recycled/upcycled clothing with ethical practices & fabrics. Hopefully, I'll be able to get a jumper such as this one before the fall months :)

The Convertible Tote/Handbag/Backpack I've been LOOKING FOR!!

As I was *surfing* Etsy last night (my favorite web site in the WORLD now!!), I ran across this bag, which is a convertible tote, handbag/shoulderbag, and backpack, all in one!! It seems very roomy (14" X 6" X 12"), it has a removable foam bottom for stability, inside & outside pockets (that's difficult to find when some of the totes are knitted/felted/etc), and a strong magnetic top closure (again, a difficult thing to find these days in ANY handbag). And with my wish to have a bag that can serve several purposes (especially since Jordan's growing up, and I'm having to keep track of more things now), this bag is REALLY APPEALING!!! It comes in dark brown with green trim, and natural, and the creator's name on Etsy is InterferenceChannel. She also has some suede yarn and crochet yarn slippers which seem very comfortable, and I hope to get a pair of those too!! But first, the handbag, because that's the most immediate need :)

Pictures of us. . .then & now

Today, I decided to work on my blog a little bit (and procrastinate!), by uploading some pictures (some I just discovered, some I already knew about)~~~

First: when my Erik was 19, he posed with his friends Jon Miller (blond) & David Jurado in 1991 during David's graduation, and it was posted on Jon's facebook (he's the one that took the pics). I realized that not only has my Erik not changed all that much, but also that his hair (which he says is an imitation of Richard Marx), was absolutely ADORABLE!! He's the one on the right in the black shirt.
Golly, he was SO thin, I figure a puff of smoke would have blown him away, looking at this picture :) But that's the man I first met & fell in love with a mere 8 years later! Happy Father's Day, my Erik!! I love you so much!!!

Second: Facebook has this application called Sketch Me, which sketches your current profile photo, and I thought it was really neat, so I made a sketch of myself, and it didn't turn out too bad!

Third: This is me now, reading Mars (a Manga series put out by Tokyopop), wearing a hat I purchased from Lisa of Berkshire Hostess Hats on Etsy.com---Please check out her shop, because she's the absolute BEST!!

I also had her custom make another messenger bag for me, from her handmade messenger bag & apron shop, made of navy corduroy & Asian patchwork colours, which is absolutely beautiful! Both shops are fabulous :)

Before I close, I need to add one very important thing:

HAPPY FATHER'S DAY, DAD!!! I miss you & love you very much :)

Johnson & Johnson Asked to Remove Chemicals from Baby Shampoo

You know, I used J&J Baby Oil on my daughter (and even on my skin) when she was about 3-4 months old for a few months. Then I started actually READING the labels (I was in residency at the time) and promptly stopped! Because she has been diagnosed with high-functioning Autism a year ago (now she's actually closer to the Asperger's spectrum), I wonder if the exposure to these chemicals may have played a major factor. . .who knows? All I can say is. . . if formaldehyde is in YOUR baby products, would you knowingly use it? OF COURSE NOT!

This is probably the most controversial I will get on my blog---but since I'm also an internist (as well as a wife & mom), I felt I could *push the envelope*

But I digress---if you don't believe me, or you want to read more, check out this article put out by Organic Consumers Association.

Nemu---Webcomics

Episode 423 - Piece of Cake

This webcomic I recently subscribed to is TOO CUTE!!

From the website:

For starters, "nemu" (pronounced "NEH-moo") is the Japanese word for "sleepy".

Anise and Kana are best friends that decide to take a trip around town one dreary afternoon. They happen upon a little shop that sells what looks like antiques and other treasures. What they find inside will change their lives forever!

The best place to start reading if you are new to nemu*nemu is the first comic strip which was published on April 1, 2006. Because we only publish three times a week, the initial reaction to the first strip was mixed as it's actually a preview to what's to come. Some people thought that the shop keeper's eyes were inside the box! If you start at the beginning, you'll see what we mean. Start reading nemu*nemu from the beginning.

Thought I'd share that with y'all. . . a fun, clean webcomic (it comes out Mon/Wed/Fri with a new *webisode* (my choice of words)) that's cute & has a great following!

Bea Arthur---What an Actress & Comedian!!

By now, the entire world has heard that Beatrice Arthur, well known for her roles on that wonderful sitcom The Golden Girls, Maude, and the film Mame, passed away to her eternal reward on Saturday, April 25th 2009, at the age of 86. She is one of my most favorite actresses of all time, because of her rapier wit, her comedic timing, and her dedication to her work. I know she'll be greatly missed, and continues to be well-loved~~~

Cranberry-Sweet Potato Cookies

Cranberry-Sweet Potato Cookies

By Cathe Olson

(my note: I just can't resist anything with cranberries and/or sweet potatoes in them!! YUMMY!!!)

Ingredients:
  • 1/3 cup maple syrup, brown rice syrup, or agave nectar
  • 1/2 cup softened butter substitute (like Earth Balance) or coconut oil
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Ener-G egg replacer equivalent to 1 egg
  • 1 cup mashed cooked sweet potato
  • 1 3/4 cups whole wheat, barley, or brown rice flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice
  • 3/4 cup dried cranberries
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans

Preheat oven to 375°F. Beat together sweetener and butter substitute or coconut oil until smooth. Add vanilla, egg replacer, and pumpkin and beat well. In separate bowl, sift together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and pumpkin pie spice. Stir flour mixture into liquid ingredients. Fold in dried cranberries and nuts. Drop by tablespoonfuls onto unoiled cookie sheets. Bake about 10 minutes, or until bottoms are golden. Cool on wire rack.

Makes about 3 dozen

Note: If you don't have pumpkin pie spice, use 3/4 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/2 teaspoon cardamom, and 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg.

Recipe adapted from The Vegetarian Mother's Cookbook copyright © 2005.

Vegan Pumpkin Biscotti

Vegan Pumpkin Biscotti

A light, tender, flaky, and decadent biscotti, present this to friends and family on your special occasions or as a special treat.

(my note: for those who are not vegan or vegetarian, you can use eggs, chocolate chips, and butter, but if you use butter, I'd probably decrease the salt to 1/4 tsp. I LOVE pistachios, walnuts, and almonds, so that's what's going into my biscotti---I'll actually try this out once we get into the new house!)

Ingredients:
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup Earth Balance margarine
  • 1 tablespoon Ener-G Egg Replacer
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1/2 cup pumpkin puree
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cup all purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice or cloves
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup vegan white chocolate chips or vegan semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts of your choice
Directions:
Preheat oven to 375°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Set aside.

In a stand mixer bowl, mix together the Earth Balance and sugar until well blended and fluffy. Add pumpkin puree to the creamed mixture and mix until well combined. Add vanilla, egg replacer and water and mix until everything creamy and smooth. Add flour, baking powder, spices and salt to the creamed mixture, just until incorporated. Add chocolate chips and nuts, stirring in by hand.

Divide the dough into two rectangles on the prepared baking sheet. Bake for 20 minutes. Remove from oven and let cool for 10 minutes. Cut into slices and then bake for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until lightly browned and toasted. The center of the slices will be soft but become more firm as they cool.

Since I'm a Pitta, I need this article

One of my favorite online authors, Lissa Coffey, who writes on natural healing, wrote an article a few months ago about ayurveda (essentially life science) & indigestion.

Ayurveda and Indigestion

Digestion is very important to our health, and Ayurveda has many suggestions for how to improve our digestion. Many times people who have an overabundance of pitta become imbalanced and it shows up as acid indigestion. Pitta types are prone to hyperacidity, and peptic ulcers. Stress, impatience, anger, and heat can also aggravate pitta. What to do if you have are experiencing indigestion? Avoid pitta aggravating foods like citrus fruits and juices, vinegar, tomatoes, spicy foods, fried foods, salty foods, onions and garlic. Also, avoid alcohol. Do not skip meals. An empty stomach makes more stomach acid. Eat breakfast, even if you are not hungry in the morning. Eat something even if it is just a little bit. If you skip breakfast you can be too hungry at lunchtime, and overeat. Meditate to relieve stress. Enjoy the beauty of nature. Favor cool foods and drinks. Coconut juice is especially good for pacifying the pitta dosha.

I learned about this by checking my email, which I haven't done in. . . forever!!! Our little family has just been hit by so many things, that I haven't really kept up with my natural medicine, organic, and food articles. I hope I can change that after we move.

Paul Harvey, Pioneer Commentator for Radio, dies on 2/28 at age 90

I grew up listening to Mr. Paul Harvey as a child growing up in Arizona (I can still hear his voice at age 5---". . . and this is. . . The Rest of the Story"). I loved him, his voice, how he wasn't afraid to voice his opinions, his knowledge, and his passion for delivering the truth to the radio airwaves. I didn't even know what he looked like, but I knew that if we had have met in this life, we would have been the best of friends. My mother is the cause of me loving Paul Harvey---we would be up at 5 am every morning, and before I would go to school, she would be sure to change the radio channel from the Christian radio station to Paul Harvey's 15 minute program (30 minutes on the weekend, none on Sunday). I remember when he had vocal cord disease in 1991, because it was a few years after my dad was diagnosed with HIS vocal cord paralysis, and I was estatic when Paul Harvey returned to the air after a long absence. Even after I moved to California in 1993, and then to Missouri in 1997, my mom would regularly call me and she would usually mention something she heard on the radio by Paul Harvey, and whether or not I had heard it (which I usually had).

I read in the paper today that he has passed away, about 9 months after his wife Lynne (who was also his producer). I will sorely miss Paul Harvey, without whom I feel I wouldn't have the knowledge I have today. He instilled in me a love and thirst for knowledge, search for truth, and pleasure in radio programs.

And now we know, Mr. Paul Harvey, The Rest of the Story. God Bless & keep those you have left behind.

Obama Inauguration

I, one of the many hardworking Americans President Obama talked about during his inauguration speech (at least, I hope so!), had to work all day today, and our antenna B&W TV in the office didn't *quite* work (at least, when I tried to look at it!), so I missed the entire inauguration day! However, thank GOODNESS for CNN.com & ABC.com, where I was able to stream his Oath of Office & acceptance speech (almost a *call to action* IMHO) just now! I also have the picture of them at the Inauguration Ball (but who doesn't?). I LOVE MICHELLE OBAMA'S DRESS by the up & coming designer Jason Wu!!! Great colour choice :) I just wish I had have been able to hear my greataunt (yes she really is!) Aretha Franklin sing!!! Oh well, I'll try to look for the YouTube video later. . .

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Today, as I go to work, I remember bits of the speech spoken on the Washington steps in 1963, and I how I really need to work on living my life, day by day, as a free person, and teach my child what it means to be free, all ALL things that bind and confine us. This day, more than others, is a day that I think of my own father, who was alive and present to hear Dr. King's speech in Washington that day, and who has passed on to his eternal reward February 8th 2006---I miss him very much!. Father, I do promise and contract that I will live each day a free woman.

The text of Dr. King's speech resides here. The video of the speech resides here.

Father, I won't forget. . . ever.

WUZZLES!!

What is a WUZZLE?

A wuzzle is a saying/phrase that is made up of a display of words, in an interesting way. The object is to try to figure out the well-known saying, person, place, or thing that each wuzzle is meant to represent. I absolutely ADORE solving these and found a free website where they have several posted (click the title above)---thought I'd share one here! The answers are posted here. Good luck!

DIY Pumpkin Pie Facial Mask

Even though this SHOULD have been posted during October, I was going through my old emails and blogs, and ran across this DIY recipe! I love beauty & skin care DIY posts, and decided to share it here: originated from care2.com, and *borrowed* from fig+sage

Pumpkin
Pie Face Mask

Ingredients:
2 teaspoons cooked or canned pumpkin, pureed
one-half teaspoon honey (humectant, regenerative)
one-quarter teaspoon milk (or soymilk)(alpha hydroxyl acid, enzymes digest skin cells)

Optional Ingredients
For Dry Skin
one-quarter teaspoon heavy whipping cream (moisturizing; alpha hydroxy acid)
-or-
one-half teaspoon brown sugar (exfoliates, moisturizes, alpha hydroxyl acid)---I've used the brown sugar before, and it really DOES WORK!!!

For Oily Skin
one-quarter teaspoon apple cider (tonic action promotes skin circulation; alpha hydroxyl acid; regulates pH).
-or-
one-quarter teaspoon cranberry juice (high in antioxidants critically important to the utilization of essential fatty acids to maintain balanced, nourished skin.

Directions
Combine the ingredients for your facemask. Mix gently and apply to your face avoiding the eye area. Rest and relax for 10-15 minutes while your pumpkin pie facemask gently exfoliates, nourishes and conditions your face. Vegan Zucchini Chocolate Cake

I love Zucchini, and I eat (mostly) Vegan---sometimes I do *cheat* and eat cheese though :)

Anyway, I found this recipe on Care2.com, under Healthy & Green Living in October 2008, and thought I'd share it here! Although I would alter it with rice flour instead of white flour, since I have gluten sensitivity. I find rice flour words very well as a substitute :)

By Melissa Breyer, Senior Editor, Care2 Healthy and Green Living

Against all odds, there are still plenty of zucchini lining up for one last hurrah at the greenmarket. Trying not to be outdone by the arrival of their bright and beguiling autumn neighbors (butternut squash! pumpkins!), the earnest zucchini seem to be calling out “buy me, buy me!” And to them, I succumb. I can put off one more week of fall produce for one last shot of zucchini–with which I will say ta-ta to summer, once and for all, with this lovely vegan zucchini cake.

INGREDIENTS
1 medium zucchini
1/2 cups pitted dates
1/2 cup water
3 cups flour
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teapoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 medium apple, shredded
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 cup cocoa
1 cup Sucanat or organic brown sugar
1 cup vegan chocolate chips
8 ounces soy yogurt
4 tablespoons ground flaxseed mixed with 12 tablespoons water until gelatenous
1/4 cup light vegetable oil
1 tablespoon vanilla

1. Shred zucchini, place in a colander to drain for 15 minutes, then squeeze excess water out.

2. Preheat oven to 350F. Grease a 10-inch Bundt pan.

3. Over medium heat, cook dates, stirring, in water until you have a smooth and thick liquid.

4. In a large bowl mix flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt. Add shredded apple, then stir in zucchini, dates, cinnamon, cocoa, Sucanat, chocolate chips, yogurt, flaxseed gel, oil and vanilla.

5. Pour into prepared pan. Bake 45 minutes, or until tester comes out clean.

Happy New Year 2009!

We spent the night celebrating with some dear friends at their house---since it was 'kid friendly', we were able to go this time, AND take Jordan (which is always a load off my mind!). Being the 'lightweight' that I am, I had a few sips of New England Ale, a couple of sips of champagne, and one martini (the martini was homemade and around 9 pm), and I was *out like a light* before 12:30 am! We had a lot of fun though :)

I was reading about the history of New Year's Day and ran across this in Wikipedia:

Originally observed on March 15 in the old Roman Calendar, New Year's Day first came to be fixed in January 1, 153 BC, when the two Roman consuls, after whom — in the Roman calendar — years were named and numbered, began to be chosen on that date, for military reasons. However, dates in March, coinciding with the spring equinox, or commemorating the Annunciation of Jesus, along with a variety of Christian feast dates were used throughout the Middle Ages, though calendars often continued to display the months in columns running from January to December in the Roman fashion.

Interesting, isn't it?

Oh well. . . back to charts :(

Adams' Christmas 2008

Erik & I decided that Christmas, even more than in the past, is going to be about Jordan & Jesus Christ. Therefore, we contracted with each other that we would not buy each other presents for Christmas, and made everything beautiful and wonderful for our Jordan! We tracked Santa on NOMAD last night, Jordan woke up every 10-15 minutes, looking for Santa, and I wrapped presents at 3 am! Jordan's smile & eyes are even better in person, but I thought I'd share a few pictures to show what our morning has been like!
I whipped up a batch of my *famous* french toast (YUMMY!!!), and now I'm doing something I've NEVER DONE during the day: lying in bed, reading a book, and doing nothing! Except enjoying being with family :)

There were a couple of special blessings I received Christmas Eve, which just shows me that, for whatever reason, I'm right where I need to be:

My mother (bless you!!!) sent us a special gift card in the mail, which we received on Tuesday, just in time to buy some extra gifts for Jordan. I really wanted to buy some more clothes for her, because she's growing so fast! However, clothes are *kind of* expensive, so I've always tried to purchase my items at the thrift stores (and that includes toys, handbags, clothes, houseware, etc). After school, Jordan & I went over to DAV Thrift (which usually runs tag sales of 25 cents, or half off, or even free items) for clothes for her. I called Erik, who told me that I hadn't gotten paid yet, so I knew that I didn't have much *give me* room, and could NOT get anything for myself (which was fine with me), but I knew that I'd have to say NO to Jordan if she wanted to get some extra toys or books there.

As we were looking in the isles, and Jordan was pointed to bags of toys, a woman (who looked to be in her late 40s/early 50s) approached me, and asked, "Dear, can I help your family this Christmas?" She held out a $20 bill! I refused at first, and pointed out that I saw another lady in the store, who may be in need, and I thought she would go search her out. Instead, she looked at me and asked, "Are you in need?" I said, "Well, yes, we are. . ." She then pressed the $20 into my hand, and said, "Here then, take it for you and your little one, and Merry Christmas." I was so astounded, I gave her a hug, thanked her & blessed her, and she walked away and *disappeared* around the corner. I kept saying, "Thank you Lord!" I was able to get my Jordan 3 pairs of beautiful pants, 4 long-sleeved shirts, a FREE hearts sweater (the tag said free), a bear rack (to hang up her jacket), a book on Rapunzel, and a multicoloured button up knitted indoor jacket for myself :) And when I got home, Erik informed me that I had received my paycheck 2 days early!! YAY :)

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!

My Scrapbook Collage

have a passion for scrapbooking, but not quite like other people!

When I was growing up, we were very poor, and couldn't afford even *cheap* journals, but I had plenty of notebooks given to us by church members or left over from school projects. I decided that I would use them, left over magazines and books no one wanted (eg. the library pile), and glue (plus glitter in those days!) to create my own scrapbook. In it, I had things that I loved, wish list things (eg. handbags, dolls, clothes, music, etc), pictures of family members, and some of my *scribbles*. I didn't have any nice paper to apply them onto, so I used the blank or lined page as my canvas. I think I made over 6-7 scrapbook collages (about 200 pages each one) before age 17.

Now, I do the same thing, but I bought a recycled, handmade, handbound journal from lostmitten on Etsy over a year ago, that contained 500 (!) pages, and I am slowly but surely using it for the same thing, along with my longer poems and left over scraps from brochures, cards, magazines, printouts, and photos of my daughter. It's almost second nature to do that with any journal I have now. In fact, I have difficulty just writing anymore---I have to fill the blank pages with colour. I think that's a good thing :)

Who DID start Christmas?

My sister sent this to me from a Coworker---it really got me thinking about the Christmas season, and my attitude towards it :) Enjoy!

Who Started This Christmas Stuff?

A woman was out Christmas shopping with her two children. After many hours of looking at row after row of toys and everything else imaginable; and after hours of hearing both her children asking for everything they saw on those many shelves, she finally made it to the elevator with her two kids. She was feeling what so many of us feel during the holiday season time of the year - overwhelming pressure to go to every party, every housewarming, taste all the holiday food and treats, getting that perfect gift for every single person on our shopping list, making sure we don't forget anyone on our card list, and the pressure of making sure we respond to everyone who sent us a card.

Finally the elevator doors opened, and there was already a crowd in the car. She pus hed her way into the car and dragged her two kids in with her and all the bags of stuff. When the doors closed, she couldn't take it anymore and she stated, "Whoever started this whole Christmas thing should be found, strung up and shot."

From the back of the car, everyone heard a quiet, calm voice respond, "Don't worry, we already crucified Him."

For the rest of the trip down in the elevator, it was so quiet you could have heard a pin drop. This year, don't forget to keep "the One who started this whole Christmas thing" in your every thought, deed, purchase and words. If we all did it, just think of how different this whole world would be.

AMEN!!!

"For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son; that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life." (John 3:16)

This blogsite is just plain funny!

I actually linked here from. . . some blog I was (once again!) adding to either my bookmarks, my blogroll, or Etsy.com. I really really REALLY should be doing charts, but I'm not. . . obviously! The amount of time I spend online on either Etsy or a fabric site, you'd think I'm a world-class seamstress, but I don't even know how to sew very well, and my sewing machine is too small to do much right now. . .

anyway, check out this blog, and get ready to laugh out loud! I certainly did :)

LOVE TAMN!

My first "at home" Thanksgiving in Kansas City

Ever since I moved to Kansas City in 1997, I've always had Thanksgiving either at other people's houses or at restaurants. This was because Thanksgiving is such an event at my house in Arizona, and I didn't want to cook for myself. When I met Erik, we continued the same "tradition" (for lack of a better term). When Jordan was born, still we continued. . .

Until today! My friend & co-worker Becky was also going to be alone today, so we decided to "join forces!" She's vegetarian (like me), but Erik & Jordan are not, so we made foods to appease all appetites :) And yes, Becky and I are the sort of people that don't want others to conform to our way of eating, and respect others' thoughts & food choices. We therefore made several vegetarian & vegan dishes, and Erik prepared the turkey. In fact, we were so full of food we didn't get to the sweet potato pie with fresh berries & cream dessert! Here are a couple of pictures of the dinner table (made fresh from scratch, including the rice bread that I made---first time!). The pumpkin served as an Native American dish with wild rice, soy crumbles, and spices that cooked inside the pumpkin (so the entire thing was edible), and my mashed potatoes were mashed by hand (no blenders used for anything on the table!), with the skins still intact, with a "spot" of butter! YUMMY!!!

Happy Thanksgiving!!

I'm a Frugalista!!

I was reading one of my (many) frugal blogs that I subscribe to, and Living Well for Less quoted a new word in the Oxford Dictionary listed by The New York Times today:

Frugalista: a person who lives a frugal lifestyle but stays fashionable and healthy by swapping clothes, buying secondhand, growing own produce, etc.

BOY, does that describe me to a "T", lol :) I am still working on growing my own produce, though. I planted Eggplant, Tomatoes, Violet Bell Peppers, and Basil plants this year for the first time, but it was so late in the season that when they did grow, they weren't ripe enough to harvest this season, so I'll try again next year!

The original article discussing the top words of 2008 (of which frugalista was a top-notch runner up) is here. I'm going to have to seriously take a picture of some of my outfits I'm fortunate enough to come across at thrift stores, from friends & family, and at "going to be retired" prices :) It's FUN to bargain shop and grow your own food!
